Bite correction

Bite correction is orthodontic treatment for teeth that don't meet well: an overbite, an underbite, a crossbite or crowding, in a teen or an adult.

What happens

The number of visits depends on the bite. Your doctor gives you a range after the exam and records.

  1. 01

    Step 1: Consult and exam

The doctor looks at how your teeth and jaws meet.

  2. 02

    Step 2: Records

Photos, a scan and X-rays the doctor needs to plan.

  3. 03

    Step 3: The plan

Braces or aligners, sometimes with another appliance, laid out in stages.

  4. 04

Step 4: With your dentist or a surgeon

Some bites need an oral surgeon or your dentist; we plan with them.

  5. 05

    Step 5: Finishing and retainers

We check the bite at the end and fit a retainer.

Comfort, choices and care

  • Comfort

Teeth and jaws can be sore after an adjustment. Soft food helps. We tell you what to expect before each step, and you can ask for a break.

  • If you wait, or choose another way

Some bite problems change little if you wait, and some settle in as growth ends. The doctor tells you which applies to you. Surgery is another route and is decided with a surgeon.

  • Risks and after-care

Appliances can rub, and teeth can stain or decay where plaque stays. Treatment that includes surgery carries a surgeon's risks, which the surgeon explains. Teeth drift without a retainer.

  • How it is billed

Treatment is billed as one plan, with a written estimate before it starts. Plans that cover orthodontics are billed as How fees work describes, and we never quote a price by message.

Questions about bite correction

Do I need jaw surgery?

Most bite problems are treated without it. If surgery is an option, an oral surgeon explains it, and we plan the teeth around it.

Will my dentist hear from you?

With your permission, yes. We send an update at each stage.

Can an adult have a bite corrected?

Yes. Adults move teeth too, and the doctor tells you what's likely for yours.
